Mixed Conditionals

THIS IS WHEN THE TIME IN THE IF-CLAUSE IS DIFFERENT TO TIME OF THE RESULT

PAST PRESENT
If I had studied harder, I would be at University.
If he had been to Cyprus, he would know that they drive on the left.
If she had known English better, she would have that job.
If he had won the lottery, he would be rich.

PAST FUTURE 
If she had had the money, she would be joining us for the ski trip.
If I had gotten that job, I would be starting tomorrow.
If I had been born in England, I wouldn’t have to go to the consulate next week.
If they hadn’t challenged the decision, I wouldn’t have to go to court.

PRESENT PAST 
If I spoke German, I would have applied for the exchange programme.
If I didn’t have to work such long hours, I would have signed up for that photography course.
If I lived in England, I would have gone to the London Olympics.
If I was a gardener, I would have bought a garden.
Other variations are possible, but these are the most commonly used.

EXERCISE 1
Complete the following sentences with a future or present result:

Complete with a past result:

3. If I was better looking, ___________________________________________________.
4. If I could cook, ______________________________________________________.
5. If I was a good writer, ____________________________________________


EXERCISE 2 Watch the following Mr Bean video clip from youtube, something like:

Watch the video clip.  Write out the first part of a conditional sentence, either in the past or present: e.g.
If Mr Bean was clever…..
If he wasn’t scared of heights…..
If he hadn’t gone to the swimming pool…..
If the lifeguard hadn’t stopped him…….
Write as many more as you can think of then complete the sentences with mixed conditional phrases using the appropriate tense.
